“The Austin
Area Urban League and AMD, in conjunction with AISD, Collaborate to
bring Powerful Music and Musical Dreams to the Disadvantaged”
Updated March
21, 2007
With Austin’s being
the “Live Music Capital of the World” there is a large
population of aspiring youth who want to become accomplished
musicians, singers or producers but many of them do not have the
resources or funds for musical training. The Austin Area Urban
League announces the AMD Music & Arts Institute, a new
collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.(NYSE:AMD) to
train and educate individuals who have the aspirations of
accomplishing their musical dreams!
The ultimate goal of
the AMD Music & Arts Institute at Austin Area Urban League is to
increase the opportunities for
disadvantaged youth musicians to receive musical instruction in
piano, theory as well as digital media and music production,
recording and composition. The program also expects to provide
musical instruction for adults for a fee.
“The AMD Music and
Art Institute is an amazing opportunity for us to blend our
commitment to the Austin community and
improving education with our vision to use AMD64 technology to
help creative minds tap into the full potential of the
digital age that we call AMD LIVE!,” said Charlie Boswell,
director of Digital Media and Entertainment at AMD. “With
the power of AMD64 technology, it’s incredibly exciting to think
that our next generation of local artists can have access to
the same technology the world's top digital media and
entertainment pros are using.”
Darlene Westbrook,
Austin Independent School District’s Chief Academic Officer,
says there is a clear correlation between
music education and students doing well academically in school.
"Studies show that music education helps young people develop
better math skills, greater discipline and stronger study
habits--all of which have benefits for their other academic
pursuits. It's a win-win situation for students, the school
system and community."”
Urban League Board
Chairperson Larry Davis said, “Today’s announcement is a prime
example of the positive things that can
happen when the community, the corporate sector and organization
leaders join together to invest in our future. We are poised
for great outcomes with the music institute.” Jeffrey Richard,
President and CEO of the Austin Area Urban League, believes
that the time is now. The organization is proud to lead this
responsibility, stating, “Based on Urban League’s 30 year
reputation
of serving the needs of Austin’s most disadvantaged communities
and citizens, we are positioned to provide the Austin
community with the needed education for future musicians,
composers and producers.”
